Falling in love with the south of France was no surprise to Katherine. Choosing to walk away from her past and start over was completely unexpected. A new country, a new lover, and the promise of a bright future beginning in mid-life … who knew?
Now there were the exciting dreams of restoring the property on the Cap, of beginning a new career, of experiencing the traditions of Christmas in Provence, of falling even more deeply in love with the man who inspired these hopes.
It was all so perfect, until it wasn’t.
She had embraced new possibilities in life and given her heart only to discover something was being kept from her. Something terrible from her lover’s past. Something that could destroy everything.
What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, had become her mantra. Would it be enough?

  1. What inspired you to write Promises To Keep?
Promises To Keep is Book Two in the Love in Provence series that began with The Promise of Provence. I received so many emails from readers asking for more of that story, that I turned it into a series. There are six books planned.
I originally wrote The Promise of Provence when my husband and I were living in the south of France for five months in 2013. We visit that part of the world every year and my heart really is there. So this story is partly my love letter to Provence and also a journey of a woman in her mid-fifties searching for a new beginning in her life. My books are always a combination of location and inspiring stories of women in later years.
  1. When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Nancy, I’m certain I am much older than most of the authors you interview. I began writing The Bridge Club after I turned sixty just for my real-life bridge club, eight women who have been friends for over forty years.  I was encouraged to publish the novel and, after looking into the process, decided to self-publish. I’ve been many things in my past life, including an educator, but I know I will be a writer for the rest of my life. It’s exciting to begin a new career at this stage of life and I am often asked to speak to women’s groups about that now.
  1. What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
  2. What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I love to read a wide variety of genres but would have to say that historical fiction is my favourite and, of course, anything that takes place in France.
  1. What is your favorite book?
I have too many to even begin to suggest a single title.
  1. You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
I have to answer the same as above. There are simply too many and for a variety of reasons. If I am absolutely pressed, I would say Charles Dickens for the classics and the late Canadian Pulitzer Prize winner, Carol Shields (The Stone Diaries; Unless).
  1. If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
As portrayed in the Woody Allen movie, Midnight In Paris, I would love to have hung out in France with Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and that group of writers in the “Les AnnĂ©es Folles” (Crazy Years/Jazz Age) when art, music and writing were at a dynamic turning point.
  1. When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
The discovery that I love writing fiction was a surprise to me and it consumes me now. I write every day with all of the social media demands, maintaining a blog, website and newsletter, writing guest posts, as well as working on the next WIP.
  1. Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I’ve had pets all my life including one period when we lived in the country where we had two dogs, three cats, and a pet squirrel. Now that our children are grown and on their own, my husband and I travel so often that pets are just not something we can have in our life. We have 7 grown children and 6 grandchildren with many pets in their homes and I love spending time with them.
  1. What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
Sushi !

  1. Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
I am often asked to speak to women’s groups on a variety of subjects including being an indie author. I’ve learned so much from other authors in the eight years I’ve been writing and appreciate the fantastic support and information sharing that occurs. I encourage people entering the writing world to read about the craft constantly, to join a writing and critique group, to write every day, and to be patient. When you have work that you feel is worthy of publication, find a good editor and proofreader. The best book I had recommended to me is Stephen King’s “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft”.

Thanks so much for joining in this tour!

about the author
clip_image012Patricia Sands lives in Toronto, Canada, when she isn’t somewhere else. An admitted travel fanatic, she can pack a bag in a flash and be ready to go anywhere … particularly the south of France. With a focus on travel, women’s issues and ageing, her stories celebrate the feminine spirit and the power of friendship. Encouraging women of all ages to stare down the fear factor and embrace change, Patricia has heard from readers (men too!) ages 20 to 83.
Her award-winning debut novel The Bridge Club was published in 2010 and her second novel, The Promise of Provence recently received a 2014 National Indie Excellence Finalist Award in Literary Fiction. An Amazon Hot New Release in April 2013, The Promise of Provence was also a USA Best Book 2013 Finalist ~ Women’s Fiction. Patricia returned to France in September 2013 for a book signing, hosted by Heidi’s English Bookshop in Antibes. While there, she also spent a month researching her next novel, Promises To Keep, released September, 2014.
Thanks to reader requests, these two most recent novels set in the south of France are now the beginning of the Love In Provence series. There are six novels planned.
In June 2014, Patricia led two 10-day tours of the French Riviera and the countryside of Provence. These trips were based on The Promise of Provence, with the Women’s Travel Network. Let her know if you would like to go next summer! She is already counting the days to the next tour which is scheduled from June 22 to July 4, 2015.
Find out more at Patricia’s Facebook Author Page, Amazon Author Page, Goodreads or her blog where you will find links to her books, social media, and monthly newsletter. The latter, sent once a month, contains special giveaways as well as her photography and information about the south of France, her home away from home. She would love to hear from you!
