Haven by Lucian Barnes

Haven (Desolace, #2)

Synopsis:
Katie finds that the town of Haven is not what it seems as she continues her journey across the strange world of Desolace, searching for her friend, Julie. During her travels Katie makes new friends, but also makes a horrifying discovery. The creatures that she thought to exist only in myths and legends, while she grew up on Earth, are very real on this world! The only bright spot is a message that Katie receives from Julie, but the message is filled with a sense of urgency. Will she find Julie in time? Or will the darkness of this world consume Julie first, leaving only a useless husk of flesh behind?

My thoughts:
After reading Desolace, I couldn't help but want to see what happens to the characters in this story. Just as I predicted, the author's writing does improve, giving greater detailed scenes and character development and less "telling" throughout each scene. I love the unique fantasy/paranormal aspect of the author's story line and really appreciated the faster pace of this book. Although some of the scenes are still a bit muddled and overwritten, the writer IS growing in his style and continues to improve in each book. This unique story line definitely has great potential. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment (which better be released SOON!!) :)

Author bio:
Lucian began his writing career late in 2010 after receiving encouragement from those close to him that had witnessed the evolution of his writing style. His stories are generally within the realm of the fantasy fiction genre, but at times bridge the gap between other genres as well. Sometimes reaching into the horror and science-fiction genres, his work has a paranormal flavor. Lucian's first published work, Desolace, was released in January of 2012, which was followed by the release of Haven in November of 2012. Both of these works are part of a series that he is currently working on. Lucian is currently working on book three of the series, Outpost 13, and a horror novel titled Innocence Lost. Lucian lives in Pueblo, Colorado.
